WC -

BLOWINSMOKE, the No. 4 seed in the bracket phase, beat Al Briggs Racing, 14th, by 17 points in the World Cup final. Turn Right Once In Awhile dominated paulmotors10 for third.

The final was the second-closest matchup of the bracket phase - Sunday Money 10 topped 09 Dodge Caravan Driver by one point in the Round of 16.

The two group phases followed by the bracket phases allows for some comeback stories, and this year was no different.

ABR and Rolling Thunder finished third in the groups in the first phase (only the top three from each group were guaranteed spots in the next round. ABR also advanced to the bracket phase by winning a tiebreaker for second place in its group in the second group phase (first place went to BLOWINSMOKE).

TROIA had a longer road, finishing as the best fourth-place finisher in the first group phase to advance (p10 won that group).

In terms of finish in the Overall:
1 (overall) BLOWINSMOKE 1 (WC)
2 TROIA 3
3 Damn Sunday Drivers 5
4 Stone Cold 23
5 Bassman Racing 27
6 CLOWN CAR RACING 12
7 Rolling Thunder 6
8 Sunday Money 8
9 Tony is the Man 11
10 Monster 42

DEH - Intimidator finishes strong

#3 Dale Earnhardt Sr, the No. 37 seed, dominated the second of two matchups versus No. 11 Turn Right Once In Awhile to claim the Double Elimination Heat title by 102 points. #3's run was highlighted by a series of close advancing finishes in the winners' heat - 52 in the first round, 17 in the second round, 22 in the third round, 36 in the fourth round, 24 in the sixth round and six in the seventh round.

No. 35 Damn Sunday Drivers was the next lowest seed with the most success, finishing fourth.

BLOWINSMOKE was the last remaining top 10 seed, bowing out in the seventh round and finishing seventh. Four top 10 seeds were eliminated in the third round.

The top 10 finishers in the Overall were near the front in the DEH.
In addition to TROIA (second overall), BLOWIN (first), and DSD (third):
Bassman Racing (fifth overall; third in DEH)
Rolling Thunder (seventh overall; fifth DEH)
Sunday Money 10 (eighth otherall; sixth DEH)
Tony is the Man (ninth overall; eighth DEH)
Monster (10th overall; 10th DEH)

SEH - Rolling to another trophy

Rolling Thunder posted the top scores in the final three rounds to claim the Single Elimination Heat title. It nipped paulmotors10 in the semifinals by one point before routing p10 by nearly 100 in the championship. p10 entered as the No. 50 team; RT as No. 5.

p10 was scheduled to be eliminated after the quarterfinals but 3 Virgins dropped out of RMFN after that round, allowing p10 to advance to the semifinals.

The top 10 seeds struggled mightily in SEH. RT was the only finisher among the top eight and only two others advanced to the final 16.

Among the top 10 in the final Overall standings, only RT, BLOWINSMOKE, Turn Right Once In Awhile and Tony is the Man finished among the top 10 in the SEH.

DEB - All about the quack

Fifth-seeded yduck beat No. 1 seed BLOWINSMOKE in the second of two lopsided matchups to claim the Double Elimination Bracket title.

yduck won four matchups prior to the final by 62 points or less, including a 10-point win in its first competing round (round two) over Al Briggs Racing.

No. 32 Gotta Love Jr was the highest seeded team with the best finish (fifth).

The theme of strong runs equals Overall contention applied here, as well. Rolling Thunder, which finished seventh in the Overall, was 43rd in the DEB.

Sunday, November 28, 2010

SEB - Bassman returns to the top

Bassman Racing entered as the top seed and, for the most part, dominated the Single Elimination Bracket field. BR's closest matchups were in the semifinals (35 points over Rolling Thunder) and in the final (47 points over Damn Sunday Drivers).

Five top 10 seeds were eliminated in the second round (their first round of competing in the competition); two more in the second round. BR and RT (seeded fifth) were the only T10 seeds to compete on the final weekend.

Advancing out of the first round was crucial to contending for the Overall title. Sunday Money 10 finished eighth overall and 22nd in SEB - the best among the first 33 teams eliminated.
Among eliminations in the first round, #3 Dale Earnhardt Sr finished 13th overall and 39th in SEB.

'SMOKE in the Chase

BLOWINSMOKE bettered CLOWN CAR RACING by 42 points to claim the Chase title. BLOWINSMOKE was dominant in the first nine races with five 300+ races; the team posted a season-low 152 at Miami and still won comfortably.

CCR had the most impressive non-race-winning run of the competition. It entered the Chase as the 12th out of 13 teams, didn't win a race at any point in the competition and still finished second.
Third place Turn Right Once In Awhile was 98 points behind CCR. 13th place Tony is the Man finished more than 400 points behind BLOWINSMOKE.

09 Dodge Caravan Driver entered the Leftovers pool in 15th and jumped one spot to claim the top spot in the group by 44 points over FordFucusRacing. FFR jumped 12 spots to claim 15th.

OVERALL - Up in 'SMOKE

BLOWINSMOKE was the only team with top-10 finishes in all 12 competitions. Despite that, its average of 3.4 was just one point better than second place Turn Right Once In Awhile. TROIA's only non-T10 ws in the Yahoo Fall; with a first-place finish there, TROIA would have won the title.

The win by BLOWINSMOKE isn's all that surprising, given that the team entered RMFN 2010 with top overall seed with seven finishes in the Yahoo 90th percentile or better since 2002.

Miami - shade less drama than the real race

Here are the final details - congrats to BLOWINSMOKE, which won four of the 12 RMFN titles including the Overall crown!

I'll post breakdowns of each competition in the coming days and plea for invites for 2011 (if you haven't RSVP'd already).

Phoenix - White Flag

BLOWINSMOKE needs to start at Miami and will win a couple of competitions and the 2010 RMFN title on Sunday. Good luck with that.

Check the sheet for all of the details for the competitions - we got some close finishes at Homestead.

'dega dings

RMFN's average on Sunday was a 2010 worst 222 and just four team posted scores above 300. Back to tracks we know better (and aren't at the whim of The Big One).

The two double elimination competitions didn't end after 'dega. Details below:

Paperclip, part II

Scores were way down at Martinsville. I'm attributing that to a late-season hangover - teams are tired and napping has been a better option than watching the race on most recent Sunday afternoons. I hope that changes at 'dega.

We have our final pairings in the World Cup competition. Check the sheet for details.

Also, short of a big fall over the final four races, BLOWINSMOKE will win the Overall title. But there is the 'dega beast yet to contain.

Charlotte, take 2

BLOWINSMOKE is blowing the RMFN field away. On the other end, it appears several teams are shutting it down for the season. Bummer.

Eliminations next week. Details below.

Cali-emptystands-fornia

Fontana was either really rough on some folks or the RMFN players decided to play it like the fans in California and not go all together. RMFN average of 262 was the lowest since Atlanta and seven folks were below 200 (most since Michigan). We did maintain our streak of double-digit 300+ teams to five races with 11 at the SoCal track.

REMINDER:
Drop me a line if you want an invite for 2011.

OVERALL
BLOWINSMOKE and Turn Right Once In Awhile are separated by just 0.3 points in the standings. BLOWIN's lead is due in large part to a ninth-place standing in the fall season, compared to TROIA's 23rd. BLOWIN is alive in three competitions and TROIA in five.

CHASE
Rolling Thunder
took the lead among the Chasers, and seven teams are within 100 points of RT. In the Leftovers, 09 Dodge Caravan Driver leads with 10 teams within 100 points.

SINGLE ELIM - BRACKET
Damn Sunday Drivers and Bassman Racing advanced to the final. TROIA and RT will race for third. Both semifinal matchups were decided by 35 or fewer points.

DOUBLE ELIM - BRACKET
BLOWIN beat TROIA by 21 points in the final loser-out contest and advance to the championship vs. yduck. How this matchup with end up impacting the OVERALL race is yet to be seen.
If yduck beats BLOWIN over the next three races, the competition is complete. If BLOWIN is ahead, they'll go another round (maybe call it the green/white round) to determine the winner.

SINGLE ELIM - HEAT
RT and paulmotors10 advanced to the final with big runs in the final two races (RT scored 330 at Fontana to jump from fourth to first in the semifinals). Tony is the Man and TROIA will battle for third - both matchups will cover the final six races of the season.
Similar to the "DOUBLE ELIM - BRACKET", how much TROIA's loss in the semifinals will impact the OVERALL race is to be seen.

DOUBLE ELIM - HEAT
TROIA beat Bassman by a comfortable 43 points to advance to the championship against #3 Dale Earnhardt Sr. That matchup will cover the next three races, and if TROIA wins, the same two will matchup again to determine a winner.

WORLD CUP
Through two of four races in the semifinals, and BLOWIN and TROIA lead paulmotors and Al Briggs Racing, respectively.

Good week for most, REALLY bad for a couple. Eliminations in some competitions next week.

Dover

Golden Boy 48 came out of no where to claim the top score of 370 at Dover. Only BLOWINSMOKE had a better score this season (380 at Sonoma in June). All told, 18 RMFN drivers were above 300 and the average was a solid 283.4.

We're also finding some consistency. Seven teams have posted back-to-back 300 scores and four have reached that mark for four straight races.

WORLD CUP
The only eliminations at Dover resulted in our semifinalists, and the top two seeds in the final bracket - Sunday Money 10 and Damn Sunday Drivers - didn't make it.
paulmotors10 takes on BLOWINSMOKE and Al Briggs Racing plays Turn Right Once In Awhile in the semifinals. Al Briggs is the lowest seed remaining (entered the bracket as No. 14; entered the second round as No. 30; entered the season as No. 36).
The semifinals run from Kansas to Martinsville (four races).

CHASE
Fun race provided a tight pack at the top. 11 of the 13 teams are within 133 points of each other with 10 races to go. SNAPPY LOBSTA moved to the front, as one of two teams with consecutive 300+ races.
09 Dodge Caravan Driver is dominating the Leftovers group.

OVERALL
Turn Right continues to hold the top spot, and any shift in that will likely have to come in the Yahoo Fall standings. Right now, Turn Right stands ahead of the challengers.

SINGLE ELIMINATION BRACKET
Turn Right and Bassman Racing lead their semifinal matchups. Dover marked the third of five races in the semifinals.

DOUBLE ELIMINATION BRACKET
After one race (of three) in the consolation final (loser finishes third), Turn Right has a hefty 71-point lead over BLOWINSMOKE. This one could clinch the title for Turn Right.
yduck advanced to the championship already and is awaiting the winner.

SINGLE ELIMINATION HEAT
Tony is the Man and paulmotors10 lead the semifinals; Turn Right and Rolling Thunder have lots to make up in the final two of five races in this round.

DOUBLE ELIMINATION HEAT
Turn Right built a 70-point lead over Bassman Racing in the first of three races of the consolation final (loser finishes third).
#3 Dale Earnhardt Sr advance to the championship already and is awaiting the winner.

Richmond - Our Chase field is set

OVERALL
Turn Right Once in Awhile regained the overall lead from BLOWINSMOKE, but the real news from Richmond was who qualified for our Chase and who didn't.
A quick note about our seasonal Yahoo champs and Yahoo's spring, summer and fall champs - we broke each season up equally (12 races apiece), while Yahoo has a shorter fall season (just the Chase races). Why not just call it the Chase, Yahoo?
Damn Sunday Drivers and, less so, Bassman Racing appear to have jumped back into the Overall title contention.

CHASE
On the spreadsheet below, you'll find two Chase pages. One is the standings after the Richmond race, and the second is adjusted for the Chase. Again, Chase qualifiers start at 2,000 points plus stagger and win bonus points; all non-qualifiers start at 0 points with the same additions.
We had 13 teams qualify for the Chase (top 12 plus any others within 400 points of the leader, Bassman Racing).
yduck made the cut by 11 points; Revalusions missed by 32 points.
Once the points were reset (in the second Chase sheet), wins shuffled some teams. Turn Right went from the No. 2 seed to No. 7, for example. The upside is that all 13 drivers are separated by just 160 points.
Again, 50 additional points will be awarded for race victories.

RICHMOND
We had a nice bounce back from the Atlanta flat tires, with a 264 average and 10 teams above 300 (again FC Newman was not among that group). And big congrats to #3 Dale Earnhardt Sr for its 362 - the top RMFN score of the season.

WORLD CUP
Through two of four races in the quarterfinals
Tight races in the four matchups, no team is leading by more than 68 points. Current leaders are: paulmotors10, BLOWINSMOKE, Al Briggs Racing, and Damn Sunday.

DOUBLE ELIM - BRACKET
yduck is awating the winner from the losers' bracket and will sit out rounds eight and nine.
Turn Right leads ~~Gotta Love Jr~~ by 59 points with one race to go in the seventh round; BLOWINSMOKE leads Monster by just 3 points.

DOUBLE ELIM - HEAT
#3 Dale Earnhardt Sr
is awaiting the emerging team from the losers' heat and will sit out rounds eight and nine.
Bassman Racing has a 112-point lead over second-place Damn Sunday; the top two advance to round nine. Turn Right and Rolling Thunder have points to make up.

SINGLE ELIM - BRACKET
Through two of six races in the semifinals
Damn Sunday
leads Turn Right by just 19 points; BLOWINSMOKE has built a 168-point edge over Rolling Thunder.

SINGLE ELIM - HEAT
Through two of six races in the semifinals
Tony is the Man
has a big lead - 75 points over second place paulmotors10. Top two advance to the final; Turn Right and Rolling Thunder have points to make up.

Atlanta - and a big change

3 Virgins turned everything around that I posted after Bristol by one simple move - leaving RMFN.

As a result, BLOWINSMOKE is right back in the overall mix as well as two more competitions.

The Right Turn at Bristol

Turn Right Once In Awhile appears to have the overall title locked up. Based on eliminations and TROIA's advancements after Bristol in the single, double and World Cup competitions, can anyone see a way it isn't a done deal? 50th in the fall season maybe?

More comments later this week (also fist-bump to me for a 300; about damn time).

Michigan, part II

MICHIGAN
The second visit to Brooklyn produced one of our worst race weekends of the season - just one 300 score (congrats to Caravan Driver with a 330), seven below 200 and a near-embarrassing average of 249 (so says the guy with a season average of ... 252).
The last visit here wasn't much better - two scores above 300 and an average of 257.
All of that sets up what is traditionally an exciting Saturday night at Bristol. The last time we were here, 12 teams topped 300 and we averaged 252 (sigh). Given that, we'll have eliminations in five of our competitions. Time to go for broke.

OVERALL
Turn Right Once In Awhile held the top spot, 0.7 ahead of BLOWINSMOKE.

CHASE
Caravan's win at Michigan vaulted the team from 20th to 13th and currently into the Chase field in the last spot. It looks like the teams just on the outside will need wins in the remaining three races to make the playoffs.

SINGLE ELIM - BRACKET
Bassman and Damn Sunday appear headed to the next round; the other two spots are up for grabs. The quarterfinals end at Bristol.

SINGLE ELIM - HEAT
3 Virgins leads Tony is the Man for the final of four semifinal spots by just 5 points. Last place Al Briggs is just 50 points behind 3 Virgins. The quarterfinals end at Bristol.

DOUBLE ELIM - BRACKET
yduck holds a slight lead in the remaining winners' bracket matchup; the three losers' bracket pairings have margins of less than 100. The seventh round ends at Bristol.

DOUBLE ELIM - HEAT
Damn Sunday and #3 Dale Earnhardt are separated by just 4 points in the winners' heat heading into the final race of the seventh round. In the losers' group, Rolling Thunder leads Sunday Money by 11 points for the final advancing spot. Last place Tony is the Man is 52 behind Rolling. The seventh round ends at Bristol.

WORLD CUP
The higher seeds lead four of the eight matchups, and the top seed (Sunday Money) is among those facing deficits. Al Briggs and Damn Sunday appear headed to the quarterfinals; the round of 16 ends at Bristol.

The Glen

My love-hate relationship with Tony Stewart continues ... if B.Said has a decent finish, I sniff the 300 level again. But Tony is/was Tony, and that wasn't going to happen this year. To the stuff that matters ...

OVERALL
We have our first change atop the leaderboard for the first time since the first race at Pocono. BLOWINSMOKE held the top spot for seven races, but Turn Right Once In Awhile took the lead for the first time this season after the Glen.
For those interested, a look at how's led for how many weeks in this competition: BLOWINSMOKE (8), Damn Sunday Drivers (4), CLOWN CAR RACING (3), Monster (3), Stone Cold (2), Revalusions (1), and Turn Right (1)
And BLOWIN has also blown away my theory that a fast start to the season is required to win this competition. After Daytona in February, BLOWIN stood in 44th place.

CHASE
I forgot to change the labels for the cutoff on the right side of this page before uploading the stats. However, I can tell you that the current cutoff is 12 teams - as of now, 3 Virgins would be in and Go Daddy would be out. We'll reset the points, add the regular season win bonuses and stagger the points based on standings - all after the Richmond race.

GLEN
The RMFN surge continues - 19 300+ scores and just three below 200. Monster's Glen-best 360 was the second highest top score of the season behind BLOWIN's 380 at Sonoma (RMFN also combined for 24 300+ scores at Sonoma).

SINGLE ELIM BRACKET
Two races to go in the quarterfinals - SNAPPY, Rolling and Bassman hold OK leads; Damn Sunday appears headed for the semifinals.

SINGLE ELIM HEAT
After four of six races in the quarterfinals, the eight teams are separated by just 83 points, and spots two through six by just 36 points. Hang on, fellas ...

WORLD CUP
Two races left in this round, which will produce our quarterfinalists. Two of the eight spots appear to belong to Al Briggs and Damn Sunday.

DOUBLE ELIM - BRACKET & HEAT
After one of three races in the seventh round, not much has been decided.

Penn 20 too long ...

I really could have used some rain with Hornish in the lead ... instead I settled with the 295 and am still without a 300-point race this year. I blame global warming.

OVERALL
Our leaders haven't fared that great in the second half (25th and 32nd, respectively), but the lead for BLOWINSMOKE and Turn Right Once in Awhile could be too much for the contenders to covercome. They'll need some advancements in the elimination competitions and some losses by the leaders to move up and make the final weeks interesting.

CHASE
With six races remaining before the cutoff, 14 teams are currently eligible for the title in this competition. With 18 300+ scores at Pocono (a season high for the league), moving up has been a tall order of late. Over the last three races, RMFN has combined for 35 300+ scores and just five below 200. The group's average of 285 was 1 point behind the season best at Sonoma.

DOUBLE ELIM BRACKET
yduck posted a 62-point win over BLOWINSMOKE in the winners bracket to secure a top-5 finish, as did the Cinderella of the field - Gotta Love Jr. GLJ is the No. 32 seed in this competition and barely advanced out of the first round - an 11-point lead over "~" relative Abbie Knows. Since then, GLJ has mostly cruised aside from a 7-point win over Bassman in the Third Round. GLJ beat Turn Right by 60 to advance.
In the losers' bracket, Sunday Money, 3 Virgins (the lowest seed left here at No. 34), Monster, and Stone Cold round out the rest of the field.

DOUBLE ELIM HEAT
The winners' bracket is all about the 30s. No. 35 Damn Sunday and No. 37 #3 Dale Earnhardt advanced over BLOWINSMOKE and Turn Right. They are joined by Sunday Money, Tony is the Man, Rolling Thunder and Bassman in the seventh round losers bracket.

SINGLE ELIM BRACKET
Halfway through the quarterfinals. SNAPPY LOBSTA, Damn Sunday Drivers, Rolling Thunder and Bassman lead; the overall leaders are currently trailing their matchups.

SINGLE ELIM HEAT
Halfway through the quarterfinals. BLOWINSMOKE needs to make up 36 points to move into the top 4, and Turn Rich nees to make up 59 - both over the next three races.

WORLD CUP
After the first of four races in this round, just one item to note - Damn Sunday will likely advance to the quarterfinals after building a 135-point lead over No right turns. The other seven matchups are within 55 points.

Indy

WORLD CUP
The Champions Qualifying phase is complete and we have our final 16 teams, which will finish the season in a knockout format.
Five of the eight groups needed tiebreakers to determine the final group placings. Two of those determined who advanced and who didn't, and another determined the top seed (details are in the spreadsheet on the WorldCup2 page).
Who's in (current OVERALL rank) by seed: Sunday Money (5), Damn Sunday (3), ShoeStringRacing (24), BLOWINSMOKE (1), Revalusions (14), DaleEarnhardt3 (35), SNAPPY LOBSTA (6), paulmotors10 (16), CLOWN CAR (9), Turn Right Once In Awhile (2), Tony is the Man (4), Rolling Thunder (7), SMOKE (23), Al Briggs (17), No right turns (32), 09 Dodge Caravan (22).
Who's out (same) by finish: #3 Dale Earnhardt (18), LT4SS (21), Go Daddy (13), Shake and Bake (36), ALL EIGHT (27), ~~Abbie Knows~~ (29), Stone Cold (12), billys boys 9 (28), Gonzo (34), Roughriders (30), Bassman (8), 3 Virgins (11), Team Lester (44), Seattle Spunk (41), ~~Gotta Love Jr~~ (15), Rowdy Racing (48).
ROUND THREE (four races, Pocono through Bristol)
Sunday Money (5) vs. 09 Dodge Caravan (22)
paulmotors10 (16) vs. CLOWN CAR RACING (9)
DaleEarnhardt3 (35) vs. Tony is the Man (4)
BLOWINSMOKE (1) vs. SMOKE (23)
ShoeStringRacing (24) vs. Al Briggs Racing (17)
Revalusions (14) vs. Rolling Thunder (7)
SNAPPY LOBSTA (6) vs. Turn Right Once In Awhile (2)
Damn Sunday Drivers (3) vs. No right turns (32)

DOUBLE ELIM/BRACKET
In the winners' bracket, our two overall leaders (BLOWINSMOKE and Turn Right Once In Awhile) face big deficits entering the final race of the sixth round. After four eliminations in the losers' bracket next week, we'll be down to eight teams in this competition.

DOUBLE ELIM/HEAT
In the winners' heat, BLOWIN and Turn Right would drop to the losers' heat and Damn Sunday and #3 Dale would advance and earn a top-8 finish. In the losers' heat (reminder: one race to go in the round), OVERALL contenders Bassman and Rolling are on the verge of elimination.

CHASE
16 drivers would qualify for the Chase if the regular season ended today. That number should shrink over the next five weeks.

SINGLE ELIM/BRACKET
All four quarterfinal matchups are separated by less than 50 points after two of six races in the round.

SINGLE ELIM/HEAT
Similar deal with the timeframe of this round, but it's a tad more interesting. If it ended today, BLOWIN, Turn Right and 3 Virgins (also among the OVERALL contenders) would be eliminated.

Chicago

Damn Sunday Drivers and BURNINRUBBER shared the race title with 347 each. Odd week at Chicago - 273 average with a lot of middle-runners and the best scores primarily from the bottom of the standings ...

OVERALL
Chicago marked the beginning of the second half of the season so there was some jumbling in the standings. Slow starts by the leaders - BLOWIN and Turn Right - made the top 10 look more like a top 10 instead of 2 teams and the other 8. We'll see if it stays that way ...

CHASE
Cutoff stayed at 15 teams after Chicago, due to the odd spread in scores. The leaders had put some distance between the field over the past month but that changed this week. 10 of the 15 teams in the cutoff zone have at least shared a race title (worth an additional 50 points).

SINGLE ELIM BRACKET
Elite Eight here; the biggest leads after one of six races in the round belongs to Damn Sunday and Bassman (both by 24 points). 3 Virgins is the lowest seed remaining at No. 35.

DOUBLE ELIM BRACKET
Four teams left in the winners' bracket; the sixth round covers three races, and some teams already have big leads. No. 32 Gotta Love Jr is the lowest seed alive in the winners' bracket; No. 45 Shake and Bake is the low team in the losers' bracket.

SINGLE and DOUBLE ELIM HEATS
Overall contenders are "hurting" (most other teams would settle for top-12 finishes ...) the most in these competitions. Eliminations here (single elim will run six races; double elim three) will open the Overall competition a ton.

WORLD CUP
One race to go in the Champion Qualifying and 10 teams have secured spots in the 16-team Bracket Round.
D.EARNHARDT: 1. Damn Sunday; 2. Winner of CLOWN CAR vs. Abbie Knows.
R.PETTY: 1. Sunday Money 10; 2. Turn Right Once In A While.
J.GORDON: 1. BLOWINSMOKE; 2. LT4SS, Al Briggs or Bassman.
D.PEARSON: 1. Revalusions; 2. SMOKE (won head-to-head vs. Shake and Bake 3-1)
D.WALTRIP: 1. DaleEarnhardt3; 3. Dodge Caravan, Roughriders or Stone Cold
C.YARBOROUGH: All four teams eligible for top two seeds; Gonzo has the highest average score in the round by 4 points over paulmotors, 5 over No right turns and 13 over ALL EIGHT.
B.ALLISON: 1. ShoeString; 2. Rolling Thunder
J.JOHNSON: 1. Tony is the Man; 2. SNAPPY LOBSTA or Go Daddy (split head-to-head 2-2)

Daytona, part II

OVERALL
BLOWINSMOKE and TurnRightOnceInAwhile are dominating.

CHASE
13 teams are currently eligible for the Chase, down from 26 just one month ago. The top seven teams have posted the top score in at least one week.

YAHOO FIRST HALF
BLOWINSMOKE takes this title by 8 points over TurnRight.

SINGLE ELIM BRACKET
Rolling Thunder (by 11 points over LT4SS) had the closest victory. Joining Rolling in the quarterfinals are TurnRight, BLOWIN, SNAPPY LOBSTA, CLOWN CAR, Damn Sunday Drivers, 3 Virgins (lowest remaining seed at No. 35). and Bassman Racing.

DOUBLE ELIM BRACKET
Down to 12 teams here; BLOWIN and TurnRight are both in the winners' bracket on opposite sides. The lowest remaining seed is No. 45 Shake and Bake.

SINGLE ELIM HEAT
Down to 8 teams here, including BLOWIN and TurnRight. paulmotors10 (at No. 50) is the lowest remaining seed. The third round covered six races, and Gotta Love Jr mised the cut by just 10 points.

DOUBLE ELIM HEAT
Down to 11 teams; BLOWIN and TurnRight are in the winners' heat. The seven teams that advanced in the losers' heat did so comfortably.

WORLD CUP
Just two races remain in the Champions group phase; knockout round is next.
EARNHARDT: Damn Sunday will advance; CLOWN CAR and Abby Knows are vying for the other spot.
PETTY: Sunday Money has won the group and TurnRight will finish second.

PEARSON: Team Lester has been eliminated but the top two seeds are still available; Revalusions leads.
WALTRIP: Nothing is settled here, but DaleEarnhardt3 leads the group.
YARBOROUGH: paulmotors and No right turns lead, but nothing is settled.
ALLISON: ShoeString won the group; #3 Dale and Rolling Thunder are vying for the other spot.
JOHNSON: SNAPPY and Tony is the man lead, but nothing is settled.

Sonoma

Big numbers for a lot of teams, and, as a result, the cutoff for the Chase moved up quite a bit. Some of the World Cup group races tightened a bit; others are being dominated by a handful of teams.

More eliminations in the double elimination competitions.

In the overall, we have three teams running well ahead of the rest of the field.

Pocono

A little more timely this week ...

NOTE: One more race in the double-elimination rounds.
NOTE2: Sqworls has been eliminated from RMFN but like JR Nation will still compete in the Yahoo.

Like my fantasy team, I'm having trouble finding a groove in updating this in a timely fashion. Hopefully, Pocono goes a little better ...

Dover

Sorry about the delays - work's been a witch the last few weeks.

Big changes in the overall standings after the end of the spring season, and rounds in four competitions.

One big note: JR Nation was removed from the outside competitions for nonparticipation, though will remain listed on the Yahoo page. As a result, Roughriders will take JR's place in the second round of the World Cup competition (next best fourth-place finisher) and ShoeStringRacing in the losers' bracket of the fourth round of the Double Elim Heat competition. In the WC, none of the results from the first two races in the group phases were affected; the only impact will come in later rounds.

Good luck in the summer (and I'll take some, too)!

Darlington

I had convinced myself that I posted something and then realized I hadn't - my apologies.

Big weekend at Dover coming up - end of the spring season, end of the third round in the double elim competitions and end of the second round in the single elim competitions.

Good luck!

Congrats to the teams that advanced to the Champions phase of the World Cup!

More comments, including a breakdown of what happened and how the next round works (it's very similar to the opening phase) before the next race.

Talladega

The big one was a bummer for some, bonus for others.

The league's 254 average was matched at Talladega, with a ho-hum five drivers at 300 or more points. We did tie a season-low of two drivers less than 200 points.

WORLD CUP
This is the final week of the first round or Track Qualifying.
The top three teams in each group advance to the second round (or Champion Qualifying) along with the two best fourth-place finishers.
Like past seasons, 13 points appears to be the benchmark for certain qualifying for the next round.
If your team isn't mentioned, you're done with this competition and I'll post your placing prior to the next race (based on World Cup points and average points for the 10 races).
DAYTONA: BLOWINSMOKE, Bassman and Gonzo will advance; BURNINRUBBER is in the running for a fourth-place spot.
BRISTOL: SMOKE will advance; Seattle Spunk is close; Team Lester needs at least a win; Roughriders needs at least a Lester loss.
TALLADEGA: Dodge Caravan Driver and LT4SS will advance; DaleEarnhardt3 is close; Sqworls Racing is in the running for a fourth-place spot.
LOWE'S: No right turns will advance; Revalusions and #3 Dale Earnhardt Sr are close; djs needs a win and help.
INDIANAPOLIS: ALL EIGHT RACING will advance; Shake and Bake, after scoring 0 points at Daytona, is close; but the other three teams are also still alive - yduck, RING OF FIRE and Al Briggs Racing.
HOMESTEAD: Damn Sunday Drivers, billys boys 9 and Rolling Thunder will advance; GoSlowTurnRight has a shot at a fourth-place spot.
DARLINGTON: CLOWN CAR RACING will advance; Tony is the Man and 3 Virgins are close; Rowdy Racing and Hoosier still have a shot at a fourth-place spot.
WATKINS GLEN: ShoeStringRacing will advance; SNAPPY LOBSTA and Abbie Knows are close; FordFucus and Oysters Lug Nutz need wins and help.
MARTINSVILLE: Stone Cold, JR Nation and Gotta Love Jr will advance; Black Train has a shot at a fourth-place spot.
POCONO: paulmotors, Sunday Money 10 and Go Daddy will advance; Turn Right Once in A While has a shot at a fourth-place spot.

SINGLE ELIM BRACKET
Halfway through the second round and 10 of the matchups are within 100 points.
The two closest - paulmotors leads Rolling Thunder by 5 points; GoSlowTurnRight leads Abbie Knows by 11.

DOUBLE ELIM BRACKET
After just one race in the third round, not much settled. In the winners' bracket, six of the eight matchups are led by the lower seed.

SINGLE ELIM HEAT
Halfway through the second round and the lower seeds are flexing their muscles. Five of the top 10 seeds are below the cutoff right now, and three more make up the bottom three advancing teams if the round ended in Alabama.

DOUBLE ELIM HEAT
Same story as single elim in terms of the lower seeds. Right now, only one top-10 team would advance in the winners' bracket; and in the losers' bracke, three top-10s are in danger of elimination.

OVERALL
Stone Cold and Damn Sunday Drivers continue to lead the pack.
Dodge Caravan Driver is the highest ranked team with at least one elimination in 14th place (finished 34th in the single-elimination bracket).
Hoosier is the lowest ranked team with no eliminations in 30th place.

CHASE
Same two leaders in the Overall front the Chase; the wildcard is Roughriders. With two victories, Roughriders stands third here while sitting 15th in the Yahoo Spring and 31st in the Overall.

Martinsville update

MARTINSVILLE
Harvick and the rain did few favors. We combined for a season-low average of 231, with just two teams at 300 or better (Damn Sunday Drivers and Golden Boy 48 both at the cutoff for the mark).

SINGLE ELIMINATION BRACKET
Some blowouts, some tight races and one tiebreaker highlighted the end of the first round. At the checkers, we eliminated 18 drivers from contention.

In the 26-39 matchup, Team Lester won a round-best tiebreaker over Gonzo Racing - a first in the three-year history of RMFN. Both teams finished the six races with 1,509 points, but Lester had the best individual race with 308 points to Gonzo's 278.

Eight other first-round matchups were decided by fewer than 100 points - including Swqorls over Oysters by 8 and GoSlowTurnRight over djs by 9.

The first-round winners were reseeded to set matchups in the second round, which includes 14 teams that received byes. Highlighted matchups include (based on current Yahoo standings): No. 3 Stone Cold vs. No. 6 Revalusions; No. 11 3 Virgins vs. No. 18 Sunday Money; No. 18 Anyone But Jimmie vs. No. 13 LT4SS; No. 2 Damn Sunday Drivers vs. No. 7 billy boys 9; and No. 11 SNAPPY LOBSTA vs. No. 14 Tony is the Man.

SINGLE ELIMINATION HEAT
GoSlowTurnRight took the final advancing spot by 9 points over djs and 10 over ALL EIGHT RACING.

The top 18 teams from the first round join the top 14 seeds in the second round.

paulmotors10 entered the competition as the bottom seed but advanced by finishing 17th, eight points ahead of GoSlowTurnRight.

Two teams won't advance that were seeded among the top 20: No. 18 ALL EIGHT RACING and No. 15 #3 Dale Earnhardt Sr.

OVERALL
As a result of eliminations in the two single competitions, the overall standings are taking shape. As noted last week, if you were eliminated in the first round of either of the single competitions, RMFN history is not on your side for winning the overall title.

The bottom 11 teams in the overall standings were ousted in both single events at Martinsville.

Seattle Spunk, currently in 38th, is the potential Cinderella in the single elim bracket.

SMOKE, in 18th and 09 Dodge Caravan Driver, in 21st, are the highest ranked teams in the overall standings with at least one elimination.

CHASE
CLOWN CAR RACING holds a four-point lead over Damn Sunday Drivers.

We'll advance the top 12 and any other teams within 400 points to the Chase. All but two teams currently meet that mark.

WORLD CUP
Just two teams remain unbeaten after six races - billy boys 9 and CLOWN CAR RACING are each 4-0-0.

RMFN history suggests 13 points will automatically qualify a team for the next round, while a minimum of 9 will be required to challenge for an at-large spot among the best fourth-place finishers.

Some teams have 12 points available; others as few as 9.

DOUBLE ELIMINATION BRACKET
Halfway through the second round and eight winners' bracket matchups have a difference of less than 50 points. The matchup between 3 Virgins and SNAPPY LOBSTA is the closest at 2 points. The second round has two more races and ends at Texas.

Of the nine losers' bracket matchups, only two have differences of fewer than 50 points. After Texas, we'll get rid of nine teams from contention.

DOUBLE ELIMINATION HEAT
Yours truly, FC Newman, currently holds the final spot in the winners' heat - by 2 points over ALL EIGHT RACING and by 5 over JR Nation 88.

In the losers' heat, Shake and Bake's resurgence is noted by its 597 - tops for the winners and losers in this round. RING OF FIRE currently holds the final advancing spot - by 1 point over DaleEarnhardt3 and by 7 over Roughriders.

Like the double bracket, this competition has two races before the end of the round.

Bristol update

Bristol's a rough place and it was rough on RMFN, as well. Twelve player scored 300 or more, while a season-high eight were below 200. We also posted a pedestrian 252 average score. Abbie Knows picked up the win.

Big race coming Sunday for the overall, single elim bracket and single elim heat competitions. The end of the first round is at Martinsville for the latter two, while no one who was eliminated in the first round of the single competitions contended for the overall title (even if sniffing at the Yahoo overall title). If you're on the verge of getting eliminated from the heat or bracket games, this isn't the week to think about saving a driver - go all in and make a run at advancing.

SINGLE ELIMINATION BRACKET
Martinsville is the final race of the first round. We'll reseed the winners for matchups in the second round.
Teams that appear to be a lock to move on: LT4SS, BLOWINSMOKE, and Turn Right Once in Awhile.
Matchups within 100 points heading into Sunday's paperclip run: Team Lester-Gonzo Racing (26), #3 Dale Earnhardt-paulmotors (35), Mr Sunday-SMOKE (41), billy boys-Dodge Caravan (45), Cooter-Rowdy Racing (57), and djs-GoSlowTurnRight (77).

SINGLE ELIMINATION HEAT
Like the sister bracket format, this is the final race of Round One. The top 18 advance to the second round to face the 14 who earned first-round byes.
paulmotors and Tony is the Man are tied in the 17th and 18th spots; Gonzo Racing is just six back and Rowdy Racing just 14 back.
Thirteen (13) other teams are within 100 points of the cutoff.

WORLD CUP
Halfway through the Track Qualifying round and the number of undefeateds dwindled. The elite group now includes just two teams: billy boys 9 in the Homestead group and CLOWN CAR RACING in the Darlington pack.

Atlanta

NOTABLES
* Sunday Money and BLOWINSMOKE shared the top score at Atlanta, but Money is just that with three straight races at 300+.
* Sub 200 scores remained the odd lot with just three. We've had seven since Daytona (started with five there).

WORLD CUP
Undefeated entering the fifth race: BLOWINSMOKE (Daytona Group), Seattle Spunk (Bristol), LT4SS (Talladega), ALL EIGHT RACING (Indianapolis), billy boys 9 (Homestead), CLOWN CAR RACING (Darlington), 3 Virgins (Darlington), FordFucusRacing (Watkins Glen), Gotta Love Jr (Martinsville), and Sunday Money (Pocono).
Winless entering the fifth race: Roughriders (Bristol), Dale Earnhardt's Neck (Lowe's), Golden Boy (Homestead), Rowdy Racing (Darlington), Abbie Knows (Watkins Glen), Black Train (Martinsville), and Anyone but Jimmie (Pocono).

SINGLE ELIMINATION BRACKET
Two races to go in round one.
Matches with difference of less than 50 points: #3 Dale Earnhardt over paulmotors (by 25), JR Nation-ALL EIGHT RACING (34), and Go Daddy-Dale Earnhardt's Neck (46).
Likely decided: Turn Right leads RING OF FIRE (by 210) and LT4SS-Shake and Bake (319).

DOUBLE ELIMINATION BRACKET
Round one completed.
The winners and losers from the first round were reseeded to set the second-round matchups. The winners bracket is on one spreadsheet and the losers on the following sheet.
Close but ... In an matchup of RMFN regulars, Team Lester beat Rolling Thunder by 6 points, the closest of 11 first-round matchups decided by 100 points or less.
Two high-profile matchups in the second round, based on current Yahoo standings: No. 4 3 Virgins vs. No. 5 SNAPPY LOBSTA and No. 3 Bassman Racing vs. No. 6 Revalusions.

SINGLE ELIMINATION HEAT
Two races remain in round one.
Tony is the Man and SMOKE hold the final spots, by 10 points over ALL EIGHT RACING and by 23 over Gonzo Racing.
10 more teams are within 100 points of the cutoff of the top 18.

DOUBLE ELIMINATION HEAT
Gonzo Racing took the 18th and final spot to the winners bracket, edging Go Daddy by 2 points and Dodge Caravan Driver by 3.
Highest seeds bumped to the losers bracket: No. 19 Seattle Spunk and No. 21 Blessed.
Lowest seeds still alive: No. 50 paulmotors, No. 49 JR Nation and No. 48 ShoeStringRacing.

HEAD TO HEAD
3 Virgins holds a one-game lead over four teams.
Disclaimer: There are some issues with the cells in the spreadsheet and I hope to be able to resolve them this weekend. If not, this competition will disappear until 2011.
